5G en aviones podría significar el fin del modo avión

Los reguladores de la UE dicen que ya es suficiente con la lentitud del Wi-Fi que obtienes en los vuelos. Si entra en vigor una nueva medida, a los pasajeros de las aerolíneas de la UE se les podría permitir el modo avión y usar 5G para transmitir contenido, acceder a aplicaciones e incluso hacer llamadas.

De acuerdo a gizmodo, la Comisión Europea está debatiendo actualmente una decisión que podría hacer que el modo avión sea cosa del pasado. Según se informa, la propuesta permitiría a las aerolíneas proporcionar tecnología 5G en lugar de exigir a los pasajeros que paguen por Wi-Fi o datos. Esto significa que los viajeros son libres de usar sus dispositivos como les plazca.

La Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones (FCC) prohibió originalmente a los pasajeros usar sus teléfonos en 1991 debido a preocupaciones sobre la interferencia con las redes celulares en tierra. También se dice que los teléfonos celulares interfieren con los sistemas de navegación de los aviones. Y el director ejecutivo del Comité de Seguridad de Vuelo del Reino Unido, Dai Whittingham, afirma que los teléfonos no estaban permitidos debido a la falta de conocimiento sobre cómo el uso del teléfono afecta a la aeronave.

Cualquiera que sea la verdadera razón, parece que las aeronaves en la UE ahora utilizarán un equipo de red especial llamado «pico-célula» para enrutar llamadas, textos y datos a través de una red satelital. Esta nueva tecnología conectará la aeronave a la red móvil en tierra.

Además, las preocupaciones que los reguladores tenían anteriormente con las redes móviles no parecen aplicarse a 5G. Whittingham afirma:

Hay muchas menos posibilidades de interferencia. Tenemos un rango diferente de frecuencias para 5G y configuraciones de potencia más bajas que las permitidas en los EE. UU. El público viajero quiere 5G. Los reguladores abrirán esa posibilidad, pero se tomarán medidas para garantizar que todo lo que hagan sea seguro.

En cuanto a cuándo se espera que todo esto entre en vigor, los viajeros de la UE tendrán que esperar hasta el 30 de junio de 2023. Los miembros de la UE deberán preparar a las aerolíneas para ofrecer 5G para esa fecha, si se acuerda el fallo.
