La UE finalmente avanza con su estándar USB-C

Es algo que todos esperaban desde hace tiempo, pero parece que la Unión Europea finalmente está lista para avanzar y hacer que USB-C sea el estándar del país.

A primera hora de esta mañana, el Consejo de la Unión Europea ha anunciado a través de su cuenta de Twitter que ha dado el visto bueno definitivo a la Directiva de Cargadores Comunes. Una directiva que haría obligatorio tener un puerto de carga USB-C en una variedad de dispositivos como teléfonos, auriculares, tabletas, consolas de juegos, teclados y más.

Según las nuevas reglas, este mandato no solo requeriría USB-C, sino que también introduciría un ícono que les diría a los consumidores si un dispositivo viene con un cargador y cuál es el rendimiento de ese cargador. Los consumidores de la UE podían elegir si comprar un nuevo dispositivo con o sin cargador. También establece que cuatro años después de la entrada en vigor de la norma, la Comisión «evaluaría si esta desagregación de ventas debe hacerse obligatoria».

Se espera que las nuevas reglas entren en vigencia a partir del otoño de 2024. Sin embargo, hay una excepción para las computadoras portátiles que extienden la fecha límite hasta la primavera de 2026.

El Consejo de la UE afirma que el objetivo de estas nuevas reglas es ahorrar dinero a los consumidores, reducir los desechos electrónicos y armonizar la carga de diferentes dispositivos. El Consejo también ha puesto la mira en la armonización de la carga inalámbrica.

Si bien estas reglas solo se aplican a los dispositivos vendidos en la UE, el valor predeterminado afecta a los usuarios fuera de la UE. Uno de los ejemplos más notables es Apple. Mientras que otros fabricantes de productos electrónicos se han movido hacia USB-C, Apple ha seguido obstinadamente usando sus cargadores de iluminación. Ahora que el nuevo estándar está en vigor, obliga a Apple a adoptar finalmente USB-C.
