Meta ya no paga a los editores estadounidenses para cubrir su contenido

Meta ha informado a los editores estadounidenses que no recibirán dinero por su contenido destacado en la pestaña de noticias de Facebook. La decisión se tomará después de que el programa haya estado a prueba durante casi tres años.

Facebook lanzó la «Pestaña de noticias» hace unos años y el objetivo era convertir esta red social en un centro de agregación de noticias para los usuarios. Inicialmente, Facebook, luego rebautizado como Meta, comenzó a pagar a los editores de EE. UU. por publicar sus noticias en la pestaña Noticias. Sin embargo, el programa no salió según lo planeado y Meta ahora está rescindiendo el trato y dejando de pagar a los editores estadounidenses.

Según el informe de Axios, Meta pagó casi 105 millones de dólares a editores estadounidenses en tres años. La compañía también pagó $90 millones por videos de noticias. Las gigantescas editoriales estadounidenses se llevaron grandes porciones de este dinero. Por ejemplo, el Wall Street Journal recibió $10 millones, mientras que el New York Times recibió $20 millones. CNN también recibió 3 millones de dólares.

Una fuente le dijo al Wall Street Journal que el impulso de las noticias pagas fue un «experimento que finalmente no valió la pena». Según este informe, las reglas que obligan a las grandes empresas como Meta a pagar por las noticias las han vuelto reacias a asociarse con editores.

Meta finaliza acuerdo con editores estadounidenses

“Mucho ha cambiado desde que firmamos acuerdos hace tres años para probar si se trajeron enlaces de noticias adicionales a Facebook News en los EE. UU. La mayoría de la gente no acude a Facebook en busca de noticias y, como empresa, no tiene sentido invertir demasiado en áreas que no se ajustan a las preferencias del usuario», dijo a Axios un portavoz no especificado de Facebook.

Meta no es la única empresa que paga a los editores por sus noticias. Google también paga a algunos editores nacionales y extranjeros por el uso de su contenido. Por supuesto, la relación entre Big Tech y los editores no siempre ha sido tan pacífica.

El año pasado, la autoridad de competencia francesa multó a Google con 500 millones de euros por no pagar a los editores. Esto hizo que Google contratara a más de 300 editores en toda la UE para usar sus noticias.
