Debido a que la marca de verificación anteriormente solo estaba disponible para cuentas verificadas, era una señal de autenticidad en Twitter. Como tal, cualquier cosa que digan o publiquen en la plataforma también puede tener repercusiones fuera de ella. Esto disuadió a tales relatos de estar sesgados. Pero con el nuevo sistema, todo cambia. Twitter ahora vende el tick a cualquiera sin verificar la cuenta. Sin embargo, Twitter tiene otras medidas para frenar el abuso de la herramienta. El CEO Elon Musk ha anunciado que las cuentas (con o sin la marca de verificación) que suplanten sin indicar claramente «parodia» en su identificador serán suspendidas permanentemente de la plataforma. Según Esther Crawford, Directora de Gestión de Producto de Twitter, la empresa explorar más formas de diferenciar entre tipos de cuenta.
